Welcome to THE PHYSICS ROOM. We are still under construction at this time. |
|
This site will open soon and will contain two types of information: 1. Explanations of concepts in physics using short video instruction 2. An extensive range of worked problem videos. It is anticipated that all of early physics (high school level in UK, Australia and the USA will be covered in complete detail. The aim is for the The Physics Room to help students studying physics based on the curricula of these countries (including the IB certificate) to have a complete grounding in the conceptual basis of foundation level physics and to equip them with the problem solving skills that are required for a deep understanding of high school physics. High school physics can be taught completely with only a mathematical knowledge of arithmetic, algebra and basic trigonometry and when mathematical knowledge is required it will be dealt with so that a poor maths (I am Australian and we say "maths" not "math") background will not stop someone from understanding the physics and solving the problem. There is far too much emphasis by most teachers and administrators on high level maths skills for high school physics. Although physics is very difficult at the cutting edges of our understanding because of the maths complexity, this is NOT true of high school or even undergraduate physics and students should not feel afraid of the subject because they have been told they are too weak in mathematics. In all the years I taught high school physics in Australia at year 11 and 12, I made no demand regarding mathematics prerequiste knowledge for my classes and no student I taught for their two years of physics preparation ever failed the Year 12 VCE Physics Examination for graduation from Victorian high schools. This site will be completely FREE. My view is that education is such an important and critical asset to the human race that it is governments and responsible corporations, not individuals, who should pay for it. This site therefore will offer the knowledge that it can provide in physics to anyone who enters The Physics Room totally FREE OF CHARGE. Getting AroundStudy Areas In PhysicsOn the home page you will find links to the major modules of physics offered in the The Physics Room. Over time, these areas will grow to include every area of study in high school physics from UK A levels, USA API and Australian VCE Physics, including all the curriculum areas of the International Baccaleureate. The reason for using these sources for core curricula is simple. These courses represent the most comprehensive and innovative approaches to elementary physics and by taking their curricula as the key foundations for content in The Physics Room, every student, no matter what country they are in, can be assured they are getting a balanced, high quality introduction at the highest standards of high school physics. Detailed Study AreasWhen you click on a major Study Area another page will open which has a list of topics which are linked to a video page where you can watch a video related to the topic area. These videos will open in a new page so navigation will remain straightforward. Links to all areas are provided on each page to make navigation throughout The Physics Room as fast as possible. Videos cover two aspects of knowledge in physics. Some are focussed on discussing conceptual ideas and developing theory but where possible this sort of knowledge has been integrated into problem work because that is where conceptual knowledge is most clearly demonstrated and in the end is easiest to understand. |
